font: 13.0px Verdana;\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px;\">I have been so fortunate to get an introduction to Botswana&#8217;s elephant range directly from Elephants Without Borders.\u00a0 Mike and Kelly have been great hosts and teachers throughout my time here.\u00a0 The glorious life of a graduate student, like myself, who studies elephant movement patterns and range expansion, is far too often characterized by late nights hunched over a computer.\u00a0 However, no amount of time spent with my computer could provide the real world understanding of Botswana&#8217;s landscape and elephant population gained through this very full and exciting field visit.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1307\" style=\"width: 276px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1307\" href=\"https:\/\/elephantswithoutborders.org\/blog\/?attachment_id=1307\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1307\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1307\" title=\"the view is much better than from my office at home!\" src=\"https:\/\/elephantswithoutborders.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/IMG_1845-266x300.jpg\" alt=\"the view is much better than from my office at home!\" width=\"266\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/elephantswithoutborders.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/IMG_1845-266x300.jpg 266w, https:\/\/elephantswithoutborders.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/IMG_1845.JPG 384w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1307\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">the view is much better than from my office at home!<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 10.0px 0.0px; font: 13.0px Verdana;\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px;\">I travelled to Kasane, Botswana with my advisor, Dr. Curtice Griffin, who was also Mike&#8217;s PhD advisor.\u00a0 Shortly after arrival, we piled in the land rover for a game drive through the Chobe waterfront and finished the day with great conversation over delicious food prepared by Kelly.\u00a0 Over the next couple of days we were able to catch up and experience Kasane, where the human-wildlife interface is pervasive, inspiring, and complex.\u00a0 This is truly a special place, where wildlife still permeates the human matrix as animals travel back and forth between Chobe&#8217;s waterfront resources and important habitat situated on the opposite side of human settlement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 10.0px 0.0px; font: 13.0px Verdana;\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px;\">Next, we took the short trip from Kasane to the town of Victoria Falls, in Zimbabwe.\u00a0 We wanted to see how elephants were using the human matrix there as a somewhat parallel situation to Kasane.\u00a0 It was amazing to see how far into the town elephants were willing to go.\u00a0 While in town we also visited Victoria Falls, one of the wonders of the natural world.\u00a0 This had absolutely nothing to do with elephants, but was amazing and awe inspiring none-the-less. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 10.0px 0.0px; font: 13.0px Verdana;\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px;\">Back in Kasane again, we had a chance to visit a couple recently constructed artificial water holes.\u00a0 One was very active the two evenings we visited.\u00a0 Multiple herds of elephants made use of this pan and seemed to drink directly from the source when possible.\u00a0 The water pumps are run via solar power which have various mechanisms to keep baboons from causing havoc on them.\u00a0 I was reminded of my neighbor&#8217;s never-ending battle to keep squirrels from emptying his back-yard bird feeder.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1312\" style=\"width: 298px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1312\" href=\"https:\/\/elephantswithoutborders.org\/blog\/?attachment_id=1312\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1312\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1312\" title=\"A farmer's creative noisemaker to deter elephants\" src=\"https:\/\/elephantswithoutborders.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/IMG_1672.JPG\" alt=\"A farmer's creative noisemaker to deter elephants\" width=\"288\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/elephantswithoutborders.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/IMG_1672.JPG 288w, https:\/\/elephantswithoutborders.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/IMG_1672-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1312\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A farmer&#39;s creative noisemaker to deter elephants<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 10.0px 0.0px; font: 13.0px Verdana;\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px;\">It was now time to head into the bush and experience more of the elephant range.\u00a0 We drove through The Enclave, another place where people share their living space with elephants.\u00a0 We came across what could have been an installation art exhibit hanging just outside a family&#8217;s fenced in home.\u00a0 Collections of salvaged metal hung from trees.\u00a0 A second rope, also attached to the metal, ran behind a fence.\u00a0 \u00a0 We chatted with the family who explained how they use this home-made noise maker designed in an effort to repel elephants. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 10.0px 0.0px; font: 13.0px Verdana;\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px;\">We were now heading into the parts of the elephant range with less of a human footprint.\u00a0 We camped and explored near Savute marsh and eastern parts of Moremi Game Reserve.\u00a0 We were also fortunate to take a low level flight westward over the Selinda Spillway, all the way to the veterinary fence and then back to the Savute airstrip skirting the northern edge of the Okavango Delta.\u00a0 The aerial perspective was invaluable for gaining insight into the various habitat types and the distribution of seasonal pans.\u00a0 We also had a chance to check in on one of EWB&#8217;s collared elephants, Atticus, by tracking him from the air.\u00a0 When we found him, he was hanging out with three other bulls.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1322\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-1322\" href=\"https:\/\/elephantswithoutborders.org\/blog\/?attachment_id=1322\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1322\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1322\" title=\"Learning lesson on a bushwalk\" src=\"https:\/\/elephantswithoutborders.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/IMG_7575-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Learning lesson on a bushwalk\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/elephantswithoutborders.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/IMG_7575-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/elephantswithoutborders.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/IMG_7575.JPG 432w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1322\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Learning lesson on a bushwalk<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 10.0px 0.0px;
